What is Acromegaly

Acromegaly is a disorder of excessive bone and soft tissue growth due to elevated levels of growth hormones. In young children, prior to the completed fusion and growth of bones, excessive growth hormones can cause a similar condition called gigantism. In most cases, acromegaly is caused by over-secretion of growth hormones produced by a benign tumor of the pituitary gland.

Symptoms of Acromegaly usually develop very slowly over time. Acromegaly can cause serious complications and premature death if not treated. The goal of treatment for Acromegaly is to reduce production of growth hormones to normal levels and stop the symptoms caused by over-secretion of growth hormones.
